The answer to this common question dates back to the 1987 US Open tennis tournament. Chris Evert, a professional tennis player had been wearing a diamond bracelet during a game. Unbeknownst to Evert the bracelet broke and fell from her wrist. When she realised it was gone, Evert asked for the game to be paused temporarily to find it. The search for the bracelet was witnessed by all the live spectators as well as those TV viewers watching from home.

Ever since that day in 1987, this particular style of the bracelet, inline diamonds with secure clasps, was then known as the tennis bracelet. So whilst the tennis bracelet was not created specifically for people who play tennis, it was this particular game of tennis that inspired the name.
